Dental onlays are a type of restoration recommended to repair teeth that have been broken or have sustained damage from cracking or decay. Also known as “partial crowns,” dental onlays are designed to fit your tooth perfectly and to fully restore its shape, function and appearance. Unlike traditional dental crowns, however, onlays require very little tooth preparation before they are placed. This makes them a much more conservative treatment option, and in many cases, an onlay may be the preferred treatment option, as it will work to help preserve more of your natural tooth structure.

Dental onlays are typically recommended when the damage to your tooth extends to one or more of the cusps (pointed tips) of the tooth’s chewing surface. Onlays are usually made of material such as gold or tooth-colored porcelain. These materials give you a much more discreet treatment and provide you with a more natural-looking end result. Our skilled dentists will examine your teeth prior to providing an onlay to determine the extent of the damage and whether or not an onlay is the right option for you.
